On Friday, Israel launched a series of major airstrikes on Iran, hitting key nuclear facilities at Natanz and Isfahan and killing top military commanders and nuclear scientists. It marks a sharp escalation in tensions that turned into open conflict last year.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, long an advocate for such action, called on Iranians to rise up for their freedom, framing the attack as a global security measure.
Iran responded with waves of drone and missile attacks. Early strikes were intercepted, but by evening, explosions lit up the skies over Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, sending civilians into shelters.
Though weakened, Iran’s response showed it still has the ability to strike back hard against Israel’s most aggressive attack yet.
Peter Cardwell speaks with Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak.
